Smoke Ventilation Solutions

The purpose of smoke and heat exhaust ventilation (SHEV) systems is to lead smoke and heat out of a burning building, whilst keeping escape corridors and stairs free of smoke for the escape of the buildings occupants, and, to allow access for fire fighters.

Of fire related fatalities:- “90% of fatalities are caused by smoke poisoning from fires within buildings

A Vent Engineering' control system has the effect of increasing the escape time for the buildings' occupants, thus potentially saving their lives. Upon smoke detection, via our detectors, the AOV's (automatic opening vents),louvres or doors via electric actuators (motors) or magnetic locks will automatically open.

 

With manual call points placed at key points in the building, fireman can still override the control system, if required. All these devices will be linked to a central control panel, complete with a battery backup system in case of mains failure.

Natural smoke ventilation relies on the buoyancy of hot gases. As smoke rises, it can be exhausted from the building by opening vents automatically. The risk of rising smoke, toxic gases and heat exhaust is drawn off into the open through the smoke vents, so that escape and rescue routes remain passable.

For a natural smoke ventilation system to work efficiently, replacement or 'make up' air is necessary to provide fresh air openings in the lower part of the building via automatic opening vents and doors to achieve the effect of a rising thermal current.

 

The timing for opening all of the vents is of great importance in order to enable people to escape quickly. Therefore, the use of an automated SHEV system is to be highly recommended. The locations for opening are numerous and are as follows:

  1. Automatic opening window - smoke flows into the atmosphere
  2. Smoke shaft and AOV - smoke flows through an opening door or internal window and rises up to the AOV and flows into the atmosphere
  3. Stairwell AOV - smoke flows through an AOV located at the top of a stairwell
