smoke shaft

Smoke Shaft

A smoke shaft has an AOV on the roof, with either AOD (doors) or dampers on the internal floors to allow smoke and heat to escape:-

  • AOV roof vents
  • AOV roof louvres
  • dampers
  • AOD (automatic opening doors)
  • smoke control panels
  • switches & sensors
  • fire proof cabling

BRE smoke shaft

BRE smoke shafts are generally deployed in buildings over 18m & provide a smoke shaft adjacent to fire fighting shafts / stairwells:-

  • AOV roof vents / AOV louvres
  • extraction fans
  • dampers
  • automatic opening doors
  • smoke control panels
  • switches & sensors
  • fire proof cabling

roof SHEV ventilation

There are many instances where a SHEV roof vent is required and in essence these system are akin to a head of stairwell system (e.g. using the same component products):-

  • AOV rooflights
  • AOV roof louvres
  • smoke control panels
  • switches & sensors
  • fire proof cabling

facade SHEV ventilation

SHEV facade ventilation can take the form of AOV windows, louvre windows or facade louvres, using glass, polycarbonate glazing or solid/opaque fills to match building aesthetics:-

  • AOV bottom hung windows
  • AOV side hung windows
  • AOV louvre windows
  • AOV facade louvres
  • smoke control panels
  • switches & sensors
  • fire proof cabling

atria SHEV ventilation

For atria SHEV, smoke curtains are used in order to isolate and channel a fire's smoke and heat, protect common areas from asphyxiating smoke & heat:-

  • AOV roof vents
  • AOV roof louvres
  • smoke curtains
  • dampers / AODs
  • smoke control panels
  • switches & sensors
  • fire proof cabling

Smoke ventilation systems

Ventec supply, install and commission smoke ventilation systems for a wide variety of applications, from simple head of stairwell systems in domestic residences through to complex atrium SHEV systems in large offices and public buildings.

All our systems and component products meet current fire safety standards and building regulations. All our smoke and heat evacuation vents (SHEV) use automation to open or close them in the event of a fire.

In zones where the fire is detected or a manual alarm switch is triggered, automatic opening vents (AOVs) will be opened. AOVs, dampers, AODs (doors) in other zones will be closed to prevent ingress of smoke and heat into these unaffected zones.

What do SHEV systems do?

SHEV systems are design primarily to exhaust asphyxiating smoke and heat from a building, channelling it away from common areas where occupants might be evacuating. These common areas also form the main fire fighting lobbies and fire fighting shafts where first responders will access to the building to tackle any fire.

In this way SHEV systems add significant levels of fire safety to a building, buying vital time for occupants and fire fighters alike. As asphyxiating smoke is the main killer in building fires, the role of SHEV systems in life protection cannot be overstated. In addition to removing lethal smoke SHEV system help prevent dangerous fire heating, the main cause of flashover where building fires significantly accelerate.

Knowledge & experience

If you are about to undertake a new build project, be assured that all our systems comply with the Construction Products Regulation(CPR) and our SHEV vents are all CE EN 12101-2 certified and hold a CE Mark.

We would strongly advise all building owners and managers to consider remedial work to bring their existing building up to current SHEV standards too. We can help and advise how this can be achieved, retrofitting systems and component products as required.

Ventec have been designing, manufacturing, supplying, installing and commissioning ventilation systems for over 25 years, so if you are looking for a smoke ventilation partner for future project please contact us. Call now on:- 01202 744 958
